Those on Twitter got to hear about this in realtime. For those that don't follow me on teh twitters…

I left the office, got on the train, hopped into my car, and proceeded to go to Stamford to hit the gym. I've been really enjoying the (very difficult) new workout regime. However, along the way, I forgot my iPhone was out of power, so I decided to take a drive around North Stamford while the phone charged in the car. This allowed me some time to relax and listen to some music (huzzah XM!). North Stamford is a more affluent area of the city, and so the zoning is pretty spread out. It also tends not to have any streetlights, but does have a warren of narrow winding roads that the locals *fly* though.

It was on one of these roads that I passed a vehicle on the opposite side, whose riders were trying to figure out how to fix a flat. They seemed to have everything in order, so I slowly passed them. About 15 seconds later, *BAM*! Giant pothole eats my driver's side front tyre. No real place to pull over, and no light save the stars, I do my best, get out the jack, and the spare. I tinker with my cars, so finding the hard-point by feel isn't difficult at all (lulz). I start jacking up the car… *BAM*… the jack collapses. I've NEVER had a jack fail on me. Luckily, I didn't have my hands near it, otherwise things could have been very bad indeed. The jack is ruined, and now I can't fix the flat. Joy.

I call the Acura Assistance hotline, and they are able to get a flatbed to me… in an hour. I sit in the car for awhile, with the hazard lights still on. I notice however, that they seem a bit dimmer, but I think it must be me, as it hasn't been *that* long. I make a few calls — luckily I had a single bar (thank you Tmobile!) — to Bill and a friend to let them know what happened, and that I won't be going to the gym. By the time I hang up the phone, the lights are now very obviously dimmer, so I try to turn over the engine… NOTHING. Ugh. Modern cars have too much passive electrical crap going on to even keep hazard lights on for more than an hour. D'oh! So now I've got a dark car, on a lightless road, just shy of being in the middle of the street near a blind curve. Good times.

I realised that while my phone was still barely charged, I had plenty of charge on my iPad, so I got out of the car, and stood outside in the cold while keeping the iPad alight (I was reading a kindle book), so there would be some semblance of visible warning. It also allowed me to tweet this entire affair. Eventually the guy with the flatbed showed, and within moments, we were headed back to Greenwich. He dropped the car off at the Acura dealership, and I put the keys into the night box. I'll ring them up tomorrow to fill them in on the details.

What a pain in the arse.

Now, I'm home, and soon will take a loooooooooooong hot shower, then to bed. Good night, everyone.

So I decided to let the Acura folks do my 30k mile maintenance while it was at the place. As it turns out, all 4 of my tyres needed to be replaced. However, I wasn't going to pay $300 per OEM tyre. Instead, I used it as an excuse to FINALLY get new rubber and rims:

I stayed with the 17" because I didn't want to deal with everything that goes into a +1 step-up to the 18", and it's lighter.

O.Z. Ultraleggera Bright Silver Paint

I could have gone with an ultra high performance summer tyre and then get a new set for winter, but I HATE swapping wheels, so I went with an all-season. I wound up going with these, which rate very well, and were pretty cheap in the size I needed:

Continental ExtremeContact DWS

Yay retail therapy!
