In the tri-state area, we're experiencing massive petrol shortages. People are queuing up for 1/2 mile or more in order to fill their tanks. Some, who have waited for hours, are denied as the tanks become empty.

The Obama Administration has allowed FEMA to purchase 24 million gallons of fuel (12m regular petrol and 12m diesel) to be delivered to NY and NJ. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the pressure here in CT, as most of the queuing cars are from NY. Twenty-four million gallons seems like a large number, but I have no idea how many gallons are used by the average filling station, nor how many filling stations there are in NY and NJ. And what about the tiny state of CT?

Of course, all this comes at a time where I need to drive (yes drive… don't even get me started) to Virginia. I've hired a car, as mine's in the shop. I'm hoping PA isn't so constrained, as I plan on taking that route, rather than go straight through NY and NJ. Otherwise, I can see myself stranded on the side of the road, fuel-less somewhere in southern NJ, where Sandy hit hardest.

I am really not looking forward to this.
