I haven't had that good an LSD trip in at least 15 years. What a ride! Lemme back up a bit…
bigdanimal rang me up a few weeks ago asking if I wanted to go with him to catch a sneak peek of Speed Racer at the closing week-end of the Tribeca Film Festival. I jumped at the chance.
thornyc and
vernnyc were also in our group. Seeing films with them is always a pleasure, not only for the goodies they bring, but for their knowledge of film and critique. Seeing them tonight after not having seen any of them in quite some time was a pleasure.
This film is unlike anything that has come before, and probably like nothing you'll see again. the acting is a bit stilted, but I think that's the effect they were trying to achieve, as it's verymuch a Japanese animated TV show come to life. The colours alone would make Willy Wonka blush, and the pace of the scenes make any twitch-videogame look painfully slow by comparison. This film isn't meant to be realistic, it's meant to be fantastic, and it is.
Oh, and one more thing: Chim Chim ROCKS!
