I've been scanning Dopplr for awhile, and it's finally out of beta. Yay!

It's a mash-up of social networking and travel. You put your travel schedule in, and you can see the travel schedule of your friends. You can even share calendars and such.

Check it out:

I'm on there as "octothorpe".

Fascinating little application - presence location for travellers. Would be nice (but creepy) if it automatically fed from your GPS-enabled phone rather than you having to manually put in calendar entries into your calendar app.

Have you found it useful? What are your privacy concerns?

Well, they use publicly available APIs for things like Flickr, etc, and they're all opt-in. Also, you can only see the trips of people that have allowed you to do so, as a default. You can loosen those restrictions, if you'd like.

So yeah, I trust them with as much info as I am willing to give them.

Also, the application isn't about figuring out where you are *now*, it's about figuring out where you'll be in the future, so a GPS really isn't needed.

Interesting. I'm signed up as UrBear.

It's still a work-in-progress. Didn't take much effort to crash it, twice, and it can't find half the towns in New Jersey.

Yeah, they're out of London. When I entered Greenwich, it found Old Greenwich, but not Greenwich proper. I said "fuck it, I'm in NYC"... and it decided I was in East New York. I then changed it to New York, NY, and it "got it".

It's a cool app, although they should have gone through some usability testing. It's not at all clear what my options are, and what I can and can't do to get to where I want to go.

Well, if I were touring like I used to, I'd sure want to get on board with that thing. As it is, though, I'm pretty much stuck here... ;-)

thanks for this
