Has anyone heard about this? It's an interesting concept, although I am not sure about a woman playing the role of a M->F transsexual. Surely there are M->F transsexual thespians that could have had their big break. It feels like a bit of a joke.

Anyway, here's the link to the trailer:

Everything I've read has said that she's captured the tentative femininity of someone learning to be a biological woman. It's an interesting spin on it I think having a XX woman play the role. It would have been interesting having a transgendered person play it as well of course but this seems almost more daring.

I've seen two reviews (both in mainstream straight newspapers) and they were uniformly positive. Felicity Huffman is an incredible actress, and her face is sufficiently 'masculine' to pull it off, I think.

I saw it the Tribeca Film Festival last Spring with Kerry[livejournal.com profile] rogueboi and his partner Michael. I liked the film, although Kerry thought they should have had the MTF role played by an actual transsexual -- kinda like how we now regard Tony Randall, Mickey Rooney, Marlon Brando, and Joel Grey playing Asian characters to be cinematic embarrassments. To the filmmakers' credit, they did use actual transsexuals in a party scene.

It's garnered positive reviews, and some critical praise for Felicity Huffman, who got a Golden Glove nomination for the role, as well as named Best Actress by the National Board of Review.

It a charming and moving road movie, mostly funny. I also liked the cinematography and the score, as well as the ending, which declines to tie every thing up neatly like most Hollywood movies do.

The camera work did intrigue me quite a bit. I may check it out when it comes out.
