The feature-set has been frozen. (no, I am not telling you what it is. If we drop things, you'll only feel disappointed).

The next step is to divide the giant feature-set of the application into deliverable parts. "Release early. Release often."

We also have to figure out how the modules will behave (look/feel/act). This will take awhile.

Also, I am calling people who have Ruby/Rails experience. While we haven't settled on a platform (that comes *after* deciding how the modules will behave), I am looking directly at RoR, as I like the strict MVC and rapid development structure.

Um, yeah. I know what you mean. I had hot dogs for supper.

I had mustard encrusted braised chicken with couscous, roast red pepper, and baby spinach. All organic, except the wine I used to braise the chicken and cook the couscous.

No no, I cooked with it. If I cook with it, it's fine... it's just if I drink it straight.

I keep hearing about Ruby on Rails but don't really understand what it is other than just another programming language. Is it as good as everyone says?

Ruby is a language, akin to LISP and Smalltalk. "Everything is an Object". Rails is actually a framework, like Cocoa (if you know anything about Mac OSX/NeXT programming).

People are flipping out over it because like Cocoa, the framework does all the hard work for you, all you need to do is supply the parts of your application that are unique. So yes, it is as good as everyone says. Of course, it's not going to write your app for you. That'll be in Rails 2.0 ;-)

Interesting.

My background is programming, but I stopped my classes right as we were getting into object orientated programing. I understand the concepts of thinking in "everything is an object" mindsets, but don't have much practice doing it sadly.

btw, I love that you're coming up with an alternative to bear411. I just removed my profile from there the other day after they started censoring peoples messages. That's a bit creepy I think, not to mention fascist.

Censoring messages? Do tell--I missed that.

It didn't happen to me, but a close friend of mine was noticing it. He'd say something raunchy to someone and it would come back with more "polite" text in it's place.

Something you may want to consider (not sure if it's feature material) is the ability to see profiles that have been deleted.

On Bear411 if you add someone to a friends list, it always shows up there even if that user deletes their profile. The only way to find out if it's active or not is to click on it.

I don't think that's in the best interest of the person whose profile is now deleted. Chances are, they deleted it for a reason.

I think what Brian is saying is, if you buddy someone on bear411 and their account is deleted, you don't know their account has been deleted until you click on the name. What he's suggesting is if you're going to offer some kind of buddy list feature on the new site.. then when someone's profile gets deleted, on the buddylist it should be obvious.

Not really, no. Basically, it came down to people not actually putting in the effort required.
