this is for the commuter rail. We have conductors that go through the train and punch tickets, as there is no real way to put turnstiles into all the train platforms and prevent massive fair jumping.
This card is merely flashed to the conductor. It can however, double as a MetroCard, which does have a magstripe, and is used for the NYC Subway. However, because the Metro North card is monthly (good from the 1st to the last day of the month), and my MetroCard is good for 30 days from the day of activation, they never share an expiry date. So I wind up with 2 cards. No biggie.
