I can't believe I am doing this, but yes, I am taking the plunge. Sometimes plans don't work out as well as they should, and I have decided I can put off building my dream home a few more years.

Right now however, my place is in NYC. So, my lovely NYC-based LJers (both past and present), I'm trying to find a place in manhattan, brooklyn or queens, in that order. I know manhattan rather well, but I know very little about the other boroughs. I popped onto Craig's List (thanks for the tip, rogueboi), and put in a random price range of 800-1500/mo just to see what was returned. I was quite surprised at the volume of results. It then occurred to me, I haven't the foggiest notion of where some of these places are.

Are there any areas on which I should focus my efforts? Any areas of town I should avoid? Mind you, I have a lot of stuff I'd rather not have stolen. Most of you know what tastes I have (good food, easy transportation, funky living spaces, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

I need a place that can get me onto W27th and 6th quickly, as that's where I am currently working (and hope to be working there for a long time.. they are *so* fantastic).
