Queer Eye

So I happened to channel surf this evening, and popped on Bravo, as they were showing Queer Eye. This episode had an FtM trans, coming out. Considering trans folk get ZERO airtime, I thought this was a rather pleasant surprise. It was still a horrible sponsor-tastic post-consumer waste of a show, but that's the way it's been since the show began.

I didn't know that was on tonight...
I guess I was caught up with the cooking, Project Runway, and worklife hullaballoo.

I want so terribly to hate Queer Eye. I try. I really do! But somehow, week after week, the Fab 5 seem to actually care about the people they are helping--despite the corporate whoring. Call me a sap.

I find it kind of unwatchable but it actually does serve a purpose.

It shows gay people and straight people getting along.

Conservatives hate it because it devillainizes gay people.

Or course it also present gay people as sexless crusaders whose soul evolutionary purpose is to be of service to the breeders that control the world.

but that's a secondary issue.

I know what you mean ... I saw their commercials for a previous season where they did instant makeovers to the amazement of on lookers who asked "What are you, some kind of super heroes?" to which they exclaimed, "No, we're gay men!"

I felt like I should be running around offering design and fashion advice to people in peril or something. After all, I too am a gay man!

It presents gay men as clowns and pets, not as real people.

That's basically my major problem with it. "The Fab 5" are the most harmless looking, gay stereotype they could find. Hell, they even got rid of the black guy from the first couple of episodes.

My other problem has to do with the whole product placement thing. During the first season, they went to cool, small NYC shops, and now everything comes from a national chain, making sure everyone is as bland and boring as everyone else.

Of course, I know why they do this (only the national brands have deep pockets), but still.... you'd think with advertising revenue, they'd be able to give a little to the community.

For me they jumped the shark when Kyan gave one week's victim hapless straight guy Arm & Hammer brand deodorant and anti-perspirant and explained the difference to him with a straight (so to speak) face.

I used to watch the show the first couple of seasons, but lost interest. I heard on the news this morning that it is going to be canceled for the next season. Not a real big surprise there.

I heard about this episode, but apparently flaked on the air date and time. Was his "big event" (the show requires one of all its participants) the fact of his coming out?

I actually toyed with the notion of submitting myself to the fab five for all the free stuff a makeover, but alas, am not "a straight guy..."
