It's Cold

Frelling cold.

I wanted to take an early train this morning, as I have an early client meeting. As it turns out, while I took an earlier train, it arrived 7 minutes *after* my normal train was to arrive. Of course, I had to stand the entire way, packed like a lemming into a shiny metal box.

Good times.

And I guess that's why weren't you just wearing one of your nice T-shirts?

I am, actually, but it's under several layers of corduroy and denim

Lemming, perhaps...

how long is the train ride?

This one was longer than normal, as there were signaling problems (which was why it was delayed in the first place). Normally it's about 45 minutes.

Then once I get off that train, I run to the shuttle, where I stand, then get off the shuttle, and hit the R/W trains, and stand, then sprint to the office.

Overall it's only slightly over an hour if you don't count waiting for the trains (I time it right so there is little waiting, unless there is a problem).

Thank-you for the reminder of why I don't miss the daily commute from my New York City years.

Normally, I love the commute. However, with the added insanity of holiday peepers commuting on my train (yes, it's MINE!!), it's been a bit more annoying. Today however is the first day in awhile where I had to stand.

Oh, and you're 6'4"? That's a good height. It's nice to look someone in the eye for a change (I am as well, although taller in boots, obviously).

For six years I commuted on SEPTA commuter rail from the suburbs to downtown Philadelphia. Luckily most rush hour* trains made one stop after my usual station and went express the rest of the way. What I miss most is the 45 minutes or so of uninterrupted reading time each way.

I understand feeling that it's "your" train; I was quite annoyed when SEPTA rearranged the morning schedule for no apparent reason.

*Why is it called rush hour when the time period is always longer than one hour? Wishful thinking?

Yes. I couldn't bear it if I had to drive. I'd much rather nap/listen to podcasts (this morning was Sound Opinions' Christmas episode. I highly suggest them if you want to know more about good current music of various popular genres http://soundopinions.org ), or read. I don't have an EVDO/HSDPA card for my laptop, so I will often load up a bunch of pages prior to leaving, then read them on the train.

I believe you're a Project Runway fan too, correct? I used to love to listen to Tim Gunn's painfully frank podcasts the day after each episode aired. I really, really miss those since they were discontinued.

BTW, the new season of Project Runway Canada, hosted by the fierce Iman, starts up at the end of January. Look for the episodes on YouTube.

Since much of my day was spent clicking away at a computer and speaking on the phone, there was something very relaxing about simply sitting quietly with a book for a while. I guess I'm old school, but there is just some intangible quality about reading a book that I love.

Oh, I love Tim's podcasts. I think he only did it for Season 2 and 3. I still have them on my machine at home (lots of storage means never having to delete stuff). I too, enjoyed his frankness that he was unable to give while on-air. I wonder why he stopped. Perhaps his (then) new position at Liz Claiborne, and his new show took all his time.

Well, the roads probably wouldn't have been any better, if that's any consolation.

The roads themselves aren't so bad. It's all the other parts that are a mess. For some reason the sidewalks, and stairs weren't salted, and while they were shoveled when the snow was falling, they didn't de-ice them, so today it was a very dangerous slip-n-slide, and I'm wearing Vibram soles (not good on ice). I should have worn my Docs, as they're quite grippy, even on ice (I still believe everyone should have a pair).

It's a cold day by SoCal standards (11C) - cloudy and raining to boot. But I suspect that's a lot warmer than what you're dealing with....

... but still sunny, apparently.

Having done this commute w/you several times, I have a pretty good idea of the particular hell you describe. Hope the week improves soon.

Very bright out today. Lots of reflection and glare.

And yes, you should share my hell again soon ;-)

Nice yummy jacket! Vanson or Schott?

If I had to be jammed in like a lemming, I'd like for all the other lemmings to look like you.... or maybe, the female version of you :)

There is a female version of me (sans facial hair, of course), but I haven't seen her in a jillion years. Her name was December. I still miss her, and I have no idea where she is, or even if she is.
